Fairfield Community Foundation's Community Grant Fund Provides $50,000 to FCSD for Facility Dogs

Superintendent Billy Smith received a $50,000 check from the foundation on June 8 during the city of Fairfield’s “Groovin’ on the Green” concert. The grant will cover the cost of five facility dogs for district schools. Each dog will cost approximately $10,000, which includes training for the dog and school staff. Staff members will serve as handlers and will be responsible for the dog during after-school hours.

The dogs' presence this past school year resulted in a significant decrease in student behavioral issues.

Because of that impact, members of the local Chamber of Commerce Fairfield Leadership Class of 2023 established a special fund to support the ongoing expenses for the dogs. The foundation houses the “Fur Fund,” which is also part of the group’s final community impact project.

Central Elementary is the second school to have a facility dog. Support comes in part from the Fur Fund. The dog is currently “interning,” said Principal Karrie Gallo, and has been a regular visitor at the district’s elementary summer school program.
