Mark Braam » Greetings from Mr. Braam!

Greetings from Mr. Braam!

Hi, I am Mark Braam.
I am an English teacher at Fairfield High School. During the 2022-23 school year, I am teaching five bells of sophomores in College/Career-Ready English 10 and one bell of a fifth-year Journalism/Media course.
In addition to being an English teacher, I have been a journalist for the better part of a quarter century, working both in Washington, D.C., as a sports and political reporter and editor, and here as a news editor and designer at The Cincinnati Post and The Cincinnati Enquirer. You might see me at many school events with a camera in my hands and journalism students at my side!
I hope to meet you all, in the classroom, at parent-teacher conferences, or via Zoom, phone or email; meanwhile, here is my own webpage on the district website.
I have this page for a number of reasons:
1. So I can send home news (and sometimes share photos!) of what we are doing or will be doing;
2. So I can post reminders and class-specific files
3. So I can post some educational videos that I make from time to time;
4. So I can post some links to some great educational resources;
5. So I can permanently post some files, such as the class syllabus and class policies, and update them as needed; and
6. So parents and students can get an easy notification each time that I post something new.

How does this work? On the right side of this page, there is a "SUBSCRIBE" button. If you click on the subscribe button, and register, you will get an email notification every time that I post something new to the page. Please note that there is a separate page for class files, which is actually where most new things will get posted. That means you need to subscribe to both pages, please!

Now, not everything that I post will be earth-shaking(!!!), but at least you will know when and if I do.

This is a good and fast way to pass on news, get copies of homework assignments, and to permanently post some items (such as the class syllabus).

Take a look and see how it works! Please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Mr. Braam
P.S. Many things are still different this year due to the COVID-19. THINGS WILL CONTINUE TO CHANGE!!!! That means there will also be many messages that will go back and forth, and sometimes from different platforms. PLEASE ... be patient as we all (teachers, students, parents and administrators) continue to adjust, sometimes on the fly.

Whey We Proofread ... (A Continuing Series)

Our hearts go out to Kyler Strong, a Fairfield student who is fighting cancer. That makes it even tougher when a local media outlet decides a rally for Kyler was being held at the "Immediate" School.

Why We Proofread ... (A Continuing Series)

This parking garage sign's statement brought to mind so many different philosophical theories and questions that I had to share them with you all:
"I paid, therefore I am."
"One cannot park in the same garage twice."
"Parking and Nothingness."
"Parko, ergo sum" (Forgive the horrid Latin!)
"If a car honks in a garage and no one pays for it, does it make any noise?"
And my favorite creation:
"If Schrödinger's car is placed inside of a garage, and no one ever pays for it, does it exist or not exist?"

UPDATED:
My philosopher friends are checking in! Here are some of their additions to the pile of deep thoughts:
“No man's knowledge of parallel parking can go beyond his MVA experience” –John Locke
“Valets are not willing to do everything, and thus take away our free will to park where we desire and that share of the 'parking goddess' which belongs to us” –Niccolo Machiavelli“
"Liberty consists in parking where one desires” – John Stuart Mill
“It is undesirable to believe a proposition when there is no ground whatever for supposing you will be able to find a parking place when you get there." – Bertrand Russell
"There is only one good, 'parking face in', and one evil, 'taking up two spaces'” – Socrates
“If the parking attendant did not exist, it would be necessary to invent Him” –Voltaire
“The unexamined car is not worth driving” – Socrates
“Parking charges should not be multiplied unnecessarily” – William of Ockham
“The life of an automobile (in a state of parking) is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short” – Thomas Hobbes
“We park in the best of all possible garages” – Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz
“The Battery is dead! It remains dead! And the valets have killed it.”- Friedrich Nietzsche
"There is scarcely any parking without struggle." ― Albert Camus

School-Based Health Center Coming Soon

Parents,
Below is an announcement about the upcoming School-Based Health Center that will be in the old admin building by the Intermediate Building. The center will improve access to health, dental, vision and behavioral care for all children within the district, regardless of their insurance carrier or lack of insurance.

Here is the announcement:
Registration Beginning for School-Based Center Opening in Fairfield! Fairfield City School District has partnered with Primary Health Solutions for the First Fully Integrated Suburban School-based Program in the US

Primary Health Solutions, a Butler County based organization that operates Federally Qualified Health Centers, is partnering with the Fairfield City School District, OneSight, Interact for Health, Butler Behavioral Health Services and the Delta Dental Foundation to provide access to primary medical, dental, vision and behavioral health services to students, their family members and school district staff. The center will be the first fully integrated suburban school-based provider in the United States.

Construction has begun at the former administration building at 211 Donald Drive in Fairfield. With a projected opening date in December, parents are being notified about the project so that they may consider providing permission for their child to have access to the services. Services will not be provided without parental consent. The center will improve access to care for all children within the district, regardless of their insurance carrier or lack of insurance. Center staff will be available to assist families with insurance enrollment, if uninsured.

School-based healthcare can serve students differently, based on need. Statistics show that teens are the least likely to get the recommended health services. Medical services include immunizations, sports/work/annual physicals, asthma or other chronic disease management and acute care for sick or injured students. Mental Health services will be based on unique client need.
Vision services will include comprehensive eye examinations and the prescribing and dispensing of corrective lenses if necessary. Dental services will include preventative exams, cleanings, X-rays and corrective treatment as needed.

The purpose of the Center is to keep students in school and ready to learn. Students will receive care during the school day, without requiring the parents to leave work and lose wages.

About Primary Health Solutions: Primary Health Solutions is a non-profit
501 (C) (3), safety-net provider with a mission to improve community wellness through access to quality affordable healthcare.

Why We Proofread ... (A Continuing Series)

One of my students was at Mercy Hospital in the HealthPlex filling out some medical forms to get a foot checked out. Not only did she discover that she had a stress fracture, she discovered a misspelled word.
That discovery proved the point that not only kids have difficulty getting "they're, their, there" spelled correctly.
Test yourself ... which usage of the word should this be?

Why We Proofread ... (A Continuing Series)

A student noticed that a UC Health incident with private information being accidentally released was reported on ABC.
Some of it we can be worried about ... but our "BIRHT" dates? Not so worried!

Do You Need A Job??? A Second Job?

In all seriousness, folks, I know times can be tough out there.
I know that many of my students' families are struggling financially and can't find a paying job or else are making so little that they need a second job.
Here is an opportunity to make some money right now, working as a substitute in the Fairfield City School District. I know for a fact that the custodian department at the high school truly needs subs on a regular basis, specifically working after the school day is over.
Here is the announcement from the district:

"Earn While FCSD Students Learn - Substitute Opportunities Available!
Looking for an opportunity to be part of our students' growth and "earn while they learn""
Being a substitute for Fairfield City Schools is a great way to get involved with students and earn money while doing so! Substitutes are needed to fill employee absences as well as for special circumstances that may occur.
We offer substitute opportunities as educational assistants (at least $9 per hour); food service assistants ($9 per hour); custodians (at least $9.14 per hour); and bus drivers ($14 per hour).
If you are interested in any of these or know someone who might be, please call Bev Stacy at (513) 858-7103, or visit our website by clicking  this link  for more information: http://tinyurl.com/FCSDOpportunities"

Why We Proofread ... (A Continuing Series)

One of my former students noticed me bemoaning the fact that none of my current students were giving any local signs with mistakes.
She decided to load me up, starting with this beauty from a sign at Niederman Family Farm.
We both like the thought of triplets and quadruplets, but we worry about will happen to those poor babies when whatever "occer" does happen!!!

Why We Proofread ... (A Continuing Series)

It's been awhile since I have posted one in this series (c'mon, kids, let's find some local sign mistakes!!!), so I though I would share with you this TV news gem.
My question: Is this what Walter White would have been running if he had been a calculus teacher instead of a chemist?
Hmmm.
