Reminder: Quiz Wed. over Text Structures

Greetings,
Just a reminder: A quiz over text structures -- originally scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 14, but delayed due to my absence -- is now Wednesday, Feb. 15.
It is short -- just 15 multiple-choice questions -- and then students will continue work on their 2nd Independent Novel response.
Also, we will be in the computer lab #3107 for the next three days.

Opportunities in Media

Do you have an interest in media? You are invited to a FREE workshop to meet professionals in broadcasting, journalism and web journalism. It’s casual, fun and you’ll get to tour the 9 On Your Side studios! Takes place on Saturday, February 25, from 10 a.m.-noon. Seating is extremely limited. RSVP by February 22 by emailing [email protected]. You MUST put “High School Workshop” in the subject line. Include your name, grade and school.

Student-Athlete of the Week

I am always proud to note whenever one of my students gets noticed for activities outside of the classroom. Here is one of them!

MADDIE SCHAEFFER (SO) – Basketball

Maddie had 2 great all-around complete games.  Middletown - 12 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals.  Sycamore - 11 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals.  Maddie defended very well and led with many non-stat categories.”

Counselor Meetings for 2017-18 Class Scheduling

FYI: Students will be meeting with their counselors during English class on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017, to discuss their courses for the 2017-18 school year. Even if students and their families think that the student will be attending Butler Tech or transferring to another district, it is important to go ahead and schedule ... because, quite bluntly, plans change.
It is better to have scheduled and not use the classes than to not schedule and be left with no classes!!!!

Why We Proofread ...  (A Continuing Series)

Again, my students are NOT taking advantage of extra credit opportunities by sending me photos of local signs with spelling or grammatical mistakes. Here is an example of one:
The Sunoco on Route 4 near Showcase Cinemas is under "New Managment" ... but I suspect it's the same as the old management (primarily because the sign always misspells "MANAGMENT" in the same way every time it supposedly changes hands!!!).

Independent Novel/English 10 World Literature List

Attached is the English 10 World Lit list, which was distributed last week (my apologies, I thought it had posted earlier, but I discovered that the posting failed).
This list is to be used to pick an Independent Novel for one of our two upcoming units. Students may pick any book on this list, and then are responsible for finding a copy of the book, whether through bookstores, online, family, friends, libraries, or school. There are limited copies that can be obtained here
Students have had the list for almost a week. Copies of many of the books are available in the classroom for students to examine, either during class or before/after school each day.
Deadlines:
* Wednesday, Jan. 11: Students must hand in an index card containing their name, the book they are intending on reading, and their gameplan for obtaining the book
* Friday, Jan. 20: Students must have a copy of the book in their hands in the classroom for exercises that will be done that day. No excuses. Students have been told already that they MUST talk with me ahead of time if they are having issues getting a copy of the book, for whatever reason. Excuses the day the book is needed in the class will NOT be accepted.

Why We Proofread ... (A Continuing Series)

And what is wrong with these GIANT headlines?
Nothing ... except that the Lions were playing the New York Giants, and NOT the Dallas Cowboys until the following week!

NOTE FROM THE TEACHER: It has been a while since I have run one of these proofreading error photos. Why? Because my students have not been turning them in for extra credit. Be on the lookout locally for some examples and send them to me, along with explanations and locations!

My Thanks to my Students following OSU Events

Students and Parents,
I truly would like to thank my students for the support I received this morning as I waited for word on whether my children and former students were safe after today's violent events at Ohio State. It was a stressful several hours until I got word, but it was made better by their kind actions at that time and as they came back later to check if there was any news.
Thank you again,
Mr. Braam
P.S. My kids -- and as far as I know, all Fairfield kids -- are safe.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Students,
Just a quick note to let you all know that I am truly am thankful to be your teacher. I learn something new every day!
Mr. Braam

READ NOW: Football Playoff Game Parking 11/4

FROM THE DISTRICT:
The Fairfield City School District will offer free shuttle service from Fairfield Senior High School to Fairfield Stadium on Friday, Nov. 4, for the state playoff football game.
We are providing this service because of limited parking at the stadium due to construction behind Central Elementary. Four buses will start shuttling fans from the main entrance of the high school, 8800 Holden Blvd., beginning at 6 p.m. Kickoff against St. Xavier is 7:30 p.m. Please park in the front lots at the high school. The service will run to and from the stadium throughout the evening until the end of the game.
Fans can catch a return bus to the high school in front of the Fairfield Academy building, 211 Donald Drive.
We strongly encourage you to use the shuttle! A dance is also scheduled around the same time at the Intermediate School which will increase traffic congestion.

"Be The Difference Day" Assignments by Homeroom

Just so students can figure out/be reminded once more as to which day they will attend the Be the Difference Anti-Bullying program, I have attached the Excel file containing the day-by-day list of which sophomore homerooms will be attending on which day.
Each student should look for the name of their homeroom teacher, and note which day their homeroom will be attending ... either Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday (Tuesday is Election Day and the school will be closed).
On their particular day, students will report to first bell for attendance, then be dismissed to the arena for the day. A pizza and bottled water lunch will be provided for students.
Please see the earlier posted letter for additional details about Be The Difference program
